Honda has all but completed its hybrid range rollout with three hero vehicles bearing the brand’s proprietary e:HEV electric/petrol motive technology, the Jazz hatch, the ZR-V and the CR-V SUVs.

Of these three, the Jazz and CR-V also share RS model specifications, suggesting sophisticated performance and the integration of Honda’s sporting DNA. The ZR-V uses Sport to imply the same elements.

Core to each model is, of course, the e:HEV technology which uses two electric motors working with a petrol engine to improve the fuel efficiency and reduce the emissions of the petrol engines alone.

The key difference between e:HEV tech and other hybrid engine designs is that while e:HEV uses two electric motors and a petrol engine, the petrol engine acts predominantly as a generator for the electric motors.

However, the petrol motor can drive the front wheels under certain conditions. The tricky bit is that e:HEV has three drive modes easily understood as electric, hybrid and engine drive modes and the vehicle’s control unit determines which mode battery/battery-petrol/petrol is best utilised and switches between them seamlessly.
