We video review the 2023 Opel Astra GSe

Video Road Report

Introducing the Opel Astra GSe – an award-winning formula which exemplifies everything that is 21st-century Opel. Here is a car demonstrating a bold and pure design, built with precision and passion to deliver performance with an environmentally conscious consideration. Sounds hard to comprehend, doesn’t it? And yet the Opel Astra GSe with its plug-in hybrid technology mated seamlessly to a 1.6-litre, turbocharged, direct injection petrol engine, more than delivers on its promises.

The Astra is the best of all possible worlds: all the power of a performance car with the green credentials of a hybrid powertrain – an electric motor fed by a 12.4kWh battery pack – to give a combined range exceeding 750kms. Sounding better the more you read, doesn’t it? But wait, there’s more and we’re not talking steak knives!

The Opel Astra is designed to perform, and to do that, the design basics have been adhered to: low centre of gravity with an agile sports chassis matched to a sleek and slippery body design, a well-balanced wheelbase and a sports-tuned suspension. On this last, the Opel Astra runs Koni shock absorbers and frequency selective damping with responsive steering calibration, tuned to enhance the feel of this driver’s car.

And yes, it IS a driver’s car. The in-cabin ergonomics are exceptionally good with plenty of head, leg, and shoulder space, plus the seats themselves are AGR-compliant, meaning they have been tested and approved to be supportive and well-engineered for the human body. Nor has practicality suffered. The boot space is generous and very useable up to 1,286 litres, a consideration which should not be assumed, particularly with hybrid vehicles.

The Astra’s electric components do not compromise the practicality and versatility offered by this hatchback which – from the driver’s perspective – thinks it’s a sportscar. Dynamic, practical, efficient, powerful – the Opel Astra GSe delivers on all these characteristics and has safety as a core pillar of its design ethos.

Astra excels as the car for all considerations.
